Who’s New to the Neighborhood? - The Van Dyke's

by Barbara DeCofano

vandykeAlthough Cathy and Nick Van Dyke started life geologically close together (Cathy in Richmond and Nick in Salinas), these two didn’t meet until they attended California Baptist University in Riverside where they also graduated. On May 31, the Van Dykes celebrated 24 years of marriage.

Cathy and Nick have three children. Brock, 22 and the oldest, also graduated from California Baptist University with a degree in Mathematics. He will soon start teaching in New Mexico. Nicole, 19, is planning to get her degree in psychology/sociology at the same university. Bethany, 15, attends West Valley High School.

The family has done much traveling and lived in many places. They built a home in Cottonwood seven years ago . Cathy has been with Tupperware 19 years and is a Legacy Executive Director. Nick currently substitute teaches, but is hoping to soon find a permanent position.

Cathy’s father, a Southern Baptist preacher, led her to Jesus at age 5. Nick received Jesus later in life while attending a high school youth group. The Van Dykes began attending NCAC in January 2011. One of their main concerns was in finding a church with a strong emphasis on youth programs, and NCAC filled the bill.

Cathy’s favorite verse is Jeremiah 29:11 and Nick’s favorite is Isaiah 40:30, 31. Both have been in many Bible studies.

Their main thrust in their walk with the Lord is to set an example in Christian living and to continue to grow in words, actions and sharing the Gospel.

On the lighter side of life, Cathy likes to read and shop. The household also includes two “working, outdoor cats,” who Cathy admits do not work too hard.
